Fern Canyon functions as a self contained office utopia, where the lines between public and private are blurred.
The building opens towards the street, inviting the public to participate in the social spaces within the office building.
A large light core cuts diagonally through the building, aligning with the angle of the noon-time sun. Glazed walls within the interior court allows each floor to have solar access, where fire restrictions limit zero lot line glazing.
By providing natural light to each space, the building is well illuminated while also being energy efficient.
In addition to providing light to the office spaces, the canyon connects the public roof top park with the active street intersection. Planted terraced steps throughout the canyon floor brings the roof top park down while creating social environments inviting the public up.
The street level public café creates a vibrant environment for building community. The terraced steps on the canyon floor provide extra seating for the café, which are daylit down to the lowest step by the southern sun at noon, just in time for the lunch hour rush.
